Inspired to join HubSpot through a friend's glowing review of the culture and opportunities to influence DI&B activities, John joined HubSpot and has been making an impact ever since. Now working with our solutions partner to develop go-to-market strategies, John is also working to create a safe and inclusive environment for his fellow channel consulting team, fueled by his passion for DI&B.

Let's get to know John!

Can you tell us a little about your background and journey to HubSpot?

I've been in marketing roles for the past 8 years and have always looked to HubSpot for inspiration and examples to best execute the campaigns I was building. A friend of mine started working for HubSpot and I asked him about his experience and he shared how much he loved working here, how great the culture is, and how they have resource groups for LGBTQ HubSpotters to join, connect, and get support - which was a huge draw for me to join HubSpot. It turns out that the team he was on was hiring so I decided to apply! And after numerous interviews, I got the offer!

Describe a typical day in your role.

I work with our solutions partner to develop go-to-market strategies and internal processes that allow them to grow and scale, as well as drive customer retention and revenue. In addition, I keep partners up to date on the latest inbound marketing best practices and how their clients can use HubSpot to achieve their business goals. I spend a lot of my days in meetings with partners.

Tell us about a challenge you're working to solve right now.

One aspect I'm trying to work on is making a safe and inclusive environment on the Channel Consulting (CC) team. I'm participating in our team's DI&B committee to educate our CCs on a variety of DI&B topics and how they can become better allies to those who have a disability, BIPOC, sexual orientation, or gender expression from their own personal experience.

In your own words, what makes working at HubSpot unique?

Considering how supportive HubSpot is to the LGBTQ community, I feel comfortable being 100% myself at work. I've worked at conservative companies in the past and I felt that because I couldn't really be myself, it held me back in my professional life and where I wanted to go in my career. Now I feel empowered to grow my career and put my whole self into it, without fear of judgment.

If you could go back to the beginning of your career and give yourself one piece of advice, what would it be?

Don't let fear hold you back. Speak your mind, challenge opinions you don't agree with, and be a voice for those who need it most.

Who are you in your free time?
I love CrossFit, Yoga, cooking, bartending, and traveling, and I’m the proud pet owner to a cat and dog.

Who and what inspires your Queer joy
My former neighbor Kevin inspires my queer joy. He was an out and proud gay man in the 90s who lived next door to me. He was always very kind and let me come over to his house to help tend to his gardens. He moved away when I was 10, but he left a lasting impression on me that it’s ok to be who you are unapologetically. We recently re-connected and touch base several times a week to check in and catch up. He will always continue to be a source of guidance for my queer experience.

How do you celebrate Queer joy - in and outside of work?
I participate in HubSpot’s LGBTQ Leadership Council ERG, helping support the team’s mission of providing meaningful engagement and conversation with our peers, and commit to improving the lived experiences of others in the community. I’m taking the reigns to put together an in-person community event on June 14 at the Cambridge office!

Outside of work, I play LGBTQ sports like cornhole, pickleball, and volleyball through Pride Sports. It’s a great way to meet others in the community, make friends, and have some fun. I’ve also started volunteering with LGBTQ-owned businesses giving them tips and advice on inbound marketing best practices.
