How to add a mailbox on your iPhone [step-by-step guide]

We’ll show you how to add a mailbox to your iPhone or iPad, whether you use the Apple Mail app, Gmail, or the Outlook app for iOS.

How to add a mailbox on your iPhone in Apple Mail

You can start checking your email on your iPhone or iPad with the Apple Mail app. All you need are the email address and password for the mailbox you'd like to add.

In most cases, the app will automatically set everything up for you. But sometimes, you'll have to do it manually. We'll start with the automatic setup.

How to add a mailbox to Apple Mail automatically

Email providers like iCloud, Yahoo, and Gmail allow you to add your email to your phone automatically with only your email address and password.

  1. Open your phone Settings. From there, tap on Mail, then Accounts.

    Open the Settings on your iPhone and tap Mail.
  2. Tap on Add Account, and on the next screen, choose your email provider. You’ll be prompted to type in your email address and password.

How to add a mailbox to Apple Mail manually

If your email provider isn’t listed, you’ll need to add your email to your phone manually. To do this, you must know your account’s email settings. If you don’t, you can find them with Apple Mail’s email settings lookup tool. Alternatively, ask your email provider for the details. 

Once you have the settings, take the following steps to set up your mailbox on your iPhone:

  1. Open your phone Settings. From there, tap on Mail, then Accounts.
  2. Tap on Add account. On the next screen, tap Other and Add mail account.

    Tap Mail > Accounts > Add account > Other.
  3. Next, you'll be prompted to type in your name, email, password, and account description. When you've done this, tap Next.
  4. The app will automatically try to search for the appropriate email settings for your account and complete the setup. Afterward, you'll be prompted to press Done to finish the setup. Otherwise, proceed to the next step to add your email settings manually.
  5. When adding your email settings manually, the first thing you'll be required to do is choose between IMAP and POP. Your email settings will determine which is right for you, so you must check with your email provider if you aren't sure what to pick.

  6. Next, you must fill in the information for Incoming mail server and Outgoing mail server. Again, you can ask your email provider to furnish you with these details or look them up with Apple Mail’s email settings lookup tool.
  7. You'll be prompted to save everything if the settings you entered are correct. Otherwise, you'll have to make changes. Hit Save to complete the setup.

How to add a mailbox on your iPhone in the Gmail app

If you prefer the Gmail app, adding a mailbox is still straightforward. Contrary to what many might think because of the name, you can also add non-Gmail mailboxes to the Gmail app on your iPhone or iPad.

  1. First things first: open the Gmail app.
  2. Tap your profile picture, which you'll find in the top-right corner of the screen. This will open a modal where you can switch between mailboxes or add another account.
  3. On the modal, tap Add another account.
  4. Next, you must choose the account type you'd like to add. If you use an iCloud, @mac.com, or @me.com account, you might be required to input specific settings or a password. For work or school accounts, choose Outlook, Hotmail, or Live. And if your email provider isn't listed, choose Other.

  5.  If your email provider is listed, setting up your mailbox is a reasonably straightforward process. Tap Next, follow the on-screen prompts, and the app will automatically set up your mailbox.
  6. But if you chose Other because your email provider isn't listed, you'll be asked to select the type of email account you use—POP3, IMAP, or Exchange. If you don't know which your account uses, ask your email provider.
  7. Enter your password and tap Next.
  8. You'll be asked to input your incoming server settings on the next screen. Again, if you don't know this, contact your email provider.

  10.  On the next screen, you'll be presented with some account options. For most people, the default options work perfectly fine. But you can check them and make changes, then tap Next.
  11. Finally, enter your name on the next screen and tap Next.

 

How to add a mailbox on your iPhone in the Outlook app

To add your Outlook mailbox to your iPhone, follow these steps:

  1. Launch the Outlook app.
  2. If this is your first time using the app, type in your email address and tap Add account

    Fill in your email address and tap Add account.
  3. Otherwise, open your phone's Settings, navigate to Add account, and tap Add email account.
  4. Enter your password and tap Sign in. If you've enabled multi-factor authentication, you must verify your identity at this stage.
  5. Accept all permissions, swipe through the features, and that’s it; you’re all set up.
